Frequently Asked Questions

At Xenia Coin Shop, we believe there are no "small questions" when it comes to your valuables. Here's a comprehensive guide to the most common things people ask before selling or buying with us.

Selling & Appraisals

Do I need an appointment to sell coins or bullion?

Walk-ins are welcome during business hours. For large estates or collections, we recommend scheduling an appointment so we can give you the time and privacy you need.

How do you determine the value of my coins?

We base offers on live market prices for gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, auction data from Heritage, eBay, and certified grading services, and collector demand and rarity for numismatic pieces. This ensures you receive fair market value, not a low "book price" from an outdated guide.

What forms of payment do you provide?

Most transactions are paid immediately by check. For large transactions, a same-day wire transfer is available.

Do you charge for appraisals?

Verbal appraisals are free for most collections. Formal written appraisals (for estates, insurance, or legal purposes) are billed at $125 per hour. The fee is waived if we later purchase the collection.

How quickly will I get paid?

Same day. If you accept our offer, you'll leave with payment in hand before you walk out the door.

Do you make house calls?

For large collections or estates, yes. We can arrange secure off-site evaluations with proper insurance and confidentiality.

Coins & Currency

What types of coins do you buy?

U.S. gold and silver coins, 90% and 40% silver coins (pre-1965 dimes, quarters, half dollars), modern bullion coins (American Eagles, Maple Leafs, Krugerrands, etc.), rare and collectible coins across all U.S. series, and select world coins.

Do you buy paper money?

Yes. We purchase Gold and Silver Certificates, Federal Reserve notes, Confederate currency, obsolete banknotes, error notes, and more.

Do you buy world coins or foreign currency?

Yes. While U.S. coins are our specialty, we also evaluate and purchase world coins and banknotes, especially if they contain precious metals or have collector value.

Do you buy jewelry and sterling silver?

We buy gold jewelry (including broken items), sterling silver flatware, and other precious metal pieces.

Process & Trust

Why should I sell to Xenia Coin Shop instead of mailing items to an online buyer?

Immediate payment—no waiting weeks for a mailed check. Transparent evaluation while you watch. Professional credentials and decades of local reputation. Over 40 years serving Southwest Ohio.

Is my collection safe during evaluation?

Yes. All evaluations are done in-store with you present. For larger estates, we can provide secure off-site options with complete confidentiality.

What if I don't want to sell after the appraisal?

No problem. You're never pressured to sell. Many clients return later once they're ready.

Can you handle inherited collections?

Yes. In fact, this is one of our specialties. We regularly work with estate attorneys, CPAs, and families who have inherited collections. We guide you through sorting, valuing, and deciding what to keep or sell.

Technical Questions

Should I clean my coins before selling?

Never. Cleaning coins almost always reduces their value, sometimes dramatically. Bring them in as they are.

What's the difference between "spot price" and what I'm offered?

Spot price is the global market price of metal (as quoted in paper contracts). Your offer is spot price plus or minus premiums based on purity, condition, and market demand. We explain this difference openly so you know exactly how pricing works.

Do you buy graded and slabbed coins?

Yes. Coins graded by professional services are welcome and often command higher prices.

Do you buy bullion bars and rounds?

Yes. We purchase government-issued coins, private mint bars and rounds, and investment-grade bullion in many forms.
