How Bullion Pricing Works

Four factors determine bullion value:

Spot Price

The current global market price for the metal. We reference Kitco.com for live pricing throughout the day.

Gold purity stamp with '999.9' and '1M' indicating gold purity.

Purity

Government-minted coins like American Eagles are .999+ fine. Bars and rounds vary but are typically .999 or .9999 fine.

Icon of a balance scale with a dollar sign on one side and a bell on the other, symbolizing financial stability or investment.

Weight

Most bullion is measured in troy ounces. One troy ounce equals 31.1 grams.

Premium

The premium is the difference between the spot price and buy/sell price. Government-minted coins typically carry higher premiums than generic bars or rounds due to recognition and demand.

Why Sell Your Bullion to Xenia Coin Shop

We Pay More Than Pawn Shops and Generic Gold Buyers

Pawn shops and "cash for gold" operations typically pay melt value or below. We pay competitive premiums because we understand the difference between government-minted coins, recognized private mint products, and generic bullion. That knowledge translates to better offers for you.

Live Market Pricing, Updated Daily

We base our offers on current spot prices, not outdated rates. Our prices update throughout the day to reflect real market conditions. Call ahead to lock in a quote.

Understanding Bullion Terms

Buy Price: The amount Xenia Coin Shop pays when purchasing from you.

Sell Price: The amount you pay when buying from us.

Spot Price: The current global market price for gold or silver.

Troy Ounce: The standard unit of measurement for precious metals. One troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams, which is slightly more than a regular (avoirdupois) ounce at 28.3495 grams.

Premium: The amount above spot price, reflecting minting costs, demand, and market conditions.

Government vs. Private Mint Bullion

Gold coins with different designs, including a statue and a maple leaf, on a dark background.

Government-Minted Coins

These coins are produced by sovereign mints (U.S. Mint, Royal Canadian Mint, Perth Mint). These coins are legal tender with a face value, though their metal value far exceeds that amount. They're harder to counterfeit and carry higher premiums.

Private Mint Bullion

Private mint bullion is produced by refiners like Johnson Matthey, PAMP Suisse, and Sunshine Mint. These bars and rounds cost less than government coins but are backed only by the mint's reputation. Reputable mints are widely trusted and offer excellent value for buyers focused on metal weight.
