1878 7/8 Tail Feathers Morgan Silver Dollar VAM-38 “7/5” – NGC MS64
Add a fascinating early Morgan Dollar variety to your collection with this 1878 7/8 Tail Feathers Morgan Silver Dollar VAM-38 “7/5,” certified NGC MS64. The VAM-38 is a recognized die variety within the 1878 7/8 Tail Feathers “Strong” variety and is cataloged by both NGC and PCGS as VAM-38, 7/5TF.
The 7/8 Tail Feathers variety was created during the transition from the original eight-tail-feather reverse to the seven-tail-feather design. Some dies were reworked rather than completely replaced, leaving remnants of the original design visible on the finished coins. This fascinating transition produced numerous collectible Morgan Dollar varieties.
The VAM-38 “7/5” designation refers to the distinctive overdate-style characteristics in the tail feathers, where remnants of the earlier design can be seen beneath the final seven-feather configuration. This variety is especially appealing to collectors who enjoy the history and die-making intricacies behind early Morgan Dollars. PCGS specifically catalogs VAM-38 as “Strong, VAM 38, 7/5.”
Graded Mint State 64 (MS64) by NGC, this coin is fully uncirculated and offers attractive Mint State preservation, strong detail, and desirable luster. MS64 represents a Choice Mint State grade, with only minor contact marks or abrasions consistent with the grade.
Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1878 7/8TF Strong Morgan Dollar had a mintage of 9,759,300 coins. It is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, containing approximately 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver.
Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse features Liberty wearing her iconic Phrygian cap, while the reverse displays the majestic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch. As a Philadelphia Mint issue, this coin carries no mintmark.
This 1878 7/8TF VAM-38 NGC MS64 combines first-year Morgan Dollar history, a fascinating 7/5 die variety, the distinctive 7/8 Tail Feathers design, and desirable Choice Mint State preservation. It would be an excellent addition to a Morgan Dollar VAM collection, variety set, or classic U.S. silver collection.
