1878 Morgan Silver Dollar 8 Tail Feathers VAM-18 “Doubled Date” – ICG MS63

Add an interesting first-year Morgan Dollar variety to your collection with this 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar 8 Tail Feathers, VAM-18 “Doubled Date,” certified ICG MS63. The VAM-18 is a recognized variety from the early 8 Tail Feathers production of 1878 and is cataloged by PCGS as VAM-18, Doubled Date.

The VAM-18 is particularly appealing to variety collectors because of the dramatic doubling found on the obverse. LIBERTY is strongly doubled, while the date displays significant doubling, and the stars surrounding the date also exhibit distinctive doubling. The variety is a great example of the die variety diversity found during the first year of Morgan Dollar production.

Graded Mint State 63 (MS63) by ICG, this coin is fully uncirculated and retains its original Mint State character. An MS63 example can exhibit some contact marks and minor abrasions consistent with the grade while still offering attractive luster, strong detail, and excellent overall collector appeal.

The 1878 8 Tail Feathers Morgan Dollar represents an important transitional point in the series. The original 8 Tail Feathers reverse was used during the early Philadelphia Mint production before the reverse was modified later in 1878. The 1878 8TF issue had a mintage of approximately 749,500 coins.

Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse features Liberty wearing her iconic Phrygian cap, while the reverse displays an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch. Struck in 90% silver, the Morgan Dollar contains approximately 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver.

This 1878 8TF VAM-18 ICG MS63 offers an appealing combination of first-year Morgan Dollar history, the distinctive 8 Tail Feathers reverse, dramatic doubled-die characteristics, and Mint State preservation. It would make an excellent addition to a Morgan Dollar VAM collection or a specialized collection of early U.S. coin varieties.
