Struck at the San Francisco Mint, the 1878-S is an important first-year issue and a popular choice for collectors building a complete Morgan Dollar date-and-mintmark set. The issue had a mintage of 9,774,000 coins.

Graded Mint State 65 (MS65) by ICG, this coin is fully uncirculated and offers excellent overall preservation, attractive mint luster, and strong eye appeal. An MS65 represents a Gem-quality Mint State example, with only minor contact marks or abrasions expected for the grade.

The 1878-S is particularly popular for its generally strong strikes and attractive surfaces. Large quantities were preserved in Treasury and Mint holdings, helping make the 1878-S one of the more frequently encountered Mint State Morgan Dollars today.

Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse features Liberty wearing her iconic Phrygian cap, while the reverse showcases a majestic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch. The distinctive “S” mintmark identifies this coin as a San Francisco Mint issue.

Struck in 90% silver, the Morgan Dollar contains approximately 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver. Combining first-year-of-issue status, the desirable San Francisco mintmark, and a Gem ICG MS65 grade, this coin makes an excellent addition to any Morgan Dollar or classic U.S. silver collection.
