1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar – NGC MS64

Add a beautiful Choice Mint State example from the first year of the Morgan Dollar series with this 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar, certified NGC MS64. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this historic issue had a mintage of 9,774,000 coins and represents one of the earliest Morgan Dollars ever produced.

Graded Mint State 64 (MS64) by NGC, this coin is fully uncirculated and offers attractive Mint State luster, strong overall detail, and excellent eye appeal. MS64 represents a Choice Mint State example, with minor contact marks or abrasions consistent with the grade.

The 1878-S Morgan Dollar is particularly interesting because San Francisco began striking the new Morgan Dollar on April 17, 1878. The entire 1878-S mintage was produced using the early second-reverse hub, featuring the distinctive 7 Tail Feathers design and a small “S” mintmark.

Large quantities of 1878-S Morgan Dollars were held in San Francisco Mint vaults for decades rather than entering circulation immediately. As a result, many examples survived in Mint State, including attractive Gem-quality coins.

Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse features Liberty wearing her iconic Phrygian cap, while the reverse displays a majestic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch. Struck in 90% silver, each Morgan Dollar contains approximately 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver.

This 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar NGC MS64 combines first-year Morgan Dollar history, San Francisco Mint production, classic American design, and desirable Choice Mint State preservation. It would make an excellent addition to a Morgan Dollar collection, date-and-mintmark set, or classic U.S. silver collection.
