1883-S Morgan Silver Dollar – ICG AU53

Struck at the San Francisco Mint, the 1883-S had a mintage of 6,250,000 coins. Despite its substantial original production, the 1883-S is considered one of the notable condition rarities of the Morgan Dollar series, becoming significantly scarcer as grades increase.

Graded About Uncirculated 53 (AU53) by ICG, this coin exhibits light circulation wear while retaining strong overall detail and much of its original Mint State appearance. AU53 is an attractive grade for collectors looking for a well-preserved example with excellent detail and classic Morgan Dollar character.

The 1883-S is particularly interesting because it was largely absent from the massive Treasury releases that made many other Morgan Dollar issues readily available in high grades. As a result, attractive About Uncirculated and Mint State examples are considerably more desirable than the mintage figure might suggest.

The obverse features Lady Liberty wearing her iconic Phrygian cap, while the reverse displays the majestic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch. The distinctive “S” mintmark identifies this coin as a product of the historic San Francisco Mint.

Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the Morgan Dollar weighs 26.73 grams and contains approximately 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver.

This 1883-S ICG AU53 combines San Francisco Mint history, classic Morgan Dollar artistry, and attractive About Uncirculated preservation. It would make an excellent addition to a Morgan Dollar date-and-mintmark set, San Francisco collection, or classic U.S. silver collection.
