1972 Eisenhower Dollar Type 1 – NGC MS65

Add a premium Gem Mint State example of the first major reverse variety from the 1972 Eisenhower Dollar series with this 1972 Eisenhower Dollar Type 1, certified NGC MS65. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1972 Eisenhower Dollar had a total mintage of 75,890,000 coins, with the Type 1 being the original low-relief reverse used early in the year.

Graded Mint State 65 (MS65) by NGC, this coin is fully uncirculated and represents a Gem-quality example. MS65 coins display excellent overall preservation, attractive luster, and strong eye appeal, with only minor contact marks or abrasions consistent with the grade.

The Type 1 reverse is distinguished by its low-relief design and the arrangement of the Caribbean islands near Florida. NGC identifies three islands to the right of Florida, while the Earth is noticeably flatter from approximately the 8 to 11 o'clock positions. The eagle's breast feathers are also raised and distinctly defined.

Interestingly, the Type 1 is considered the scarcest of the three 1972 Eisenhower Dollar varieties in Gem Mint State. PCGS notes that examples in MS65+ and higher are particularly difficult to locate, making high-grade Type 1 pieces especially desirable to variety collectors.

Designed by Frank Gasparro, the obverse features a portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, while the reverse depicts an eagle landing on the lunar surface with an olive branch, adapted from the Apollo 11 mission insignia.

This is a copper-nickel clad Eisenhower Dollar rather than a 40% silver issue. It weighs 22.68 grams, measures 38.1 mm in diameter, and has a reeded edge.

This 1972 Type 1 NGC MS65 combines an important Eisenhower Dollar variety with premium Gem Mint State preservation. It would make an excellent addition to an Eisenhower Dollar variety set, modern U.S. coin collection, or specialized “Ike” Dollar collection.
