1972 Eisenhower Dollar Type 2 “King of Ikes” – NGC MS64

Add one of the most sought-after varieties in the entire Eisenhower Dollar series with this 1972 Eisenhower Dollar Type 2 “King of Ikes,” certified NGC MS64. The 1972 Philadelphia Eisenhower Dollar was produced in three major reverse varieties, with the Type 2 being the rarest and most desirable. NGC recognizes the Type 2 as a key issue of the Eisenhower Dollar series.

The Type 2 reverse was created when a proof reverse die was accidentally used to strike circulation coins at the Philadelphia Mint. The variety is most easily identified by the appearance of the Earth and Caribbean islands above the eagle. On Type 2 examples, the islands are extremely flat and appear almost indistinguishable, while the reverse has an overall smoother, lower-relief appearance.

Nicknamed the “King of Ikes,” the 1972 Type 2 is prized by collectors because of its rarity compared with the other 1972 Philadelphia varieties. PCGS estimates that only a small fraction of the original production survives in high-grade Mint State, with approximately 5,000 examples estimated to survive in MS60 or better and about 500 in MS65 or better.

Certified Mint State 64 (MS64) by NGC, this coin is fully uncirculated and represents a highly desirable grade for this scarce variety. MS64 examples retain their original Mint State appearance, with attractive luster and the minor contact marks or abrasions normally associated with the grade.

The obverse features President Dwight D. Eisenhower, while the reverse depicts an eagle landing on the lunar surface with an olive branch in its talons. The reverse design was adapted from the Apollo 11 mission insignia, commemorating the historic American achievement of landing astronauts on the Moon.

This 1972 Type 2 is a copper-nickel clad Eisenhower Dollar rather than a 40% silver issue. The coin has a copper core bonded to outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel. It weighs approximately 22.68 grams and measures about 38.1 mm in diameter.

For collectors of Eisenhower Dollars, modern U.S. varieties, or scarce modern coins, this 1972 Type 2 NGC MS64 offers an excellent combination of rarity, historical significance, and condition.
